Hi friends,
Career goals are one of the most important aspects of the interview. The goals should be clear, concise, realistic, and convincing. You should be able to explain your goals in just one sentence each. Building strong short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals will help you stand out and showcase your strengths to scholarship selection panels be it the Application Process or the Interview.
Short-term goals are the stepping stones that lead to your mid-term and long-term goals. They are the specific objectives that you want to achieve within a defined short period of up to 5 years. These goals could include acquiring and sharing new skills (knowledge gained through your master’s degree), taking on leadership roles in your community, or securing career positions to gain practical experience. Short-term goals should align with your long-term goals and help you progress toward them. Sometimes short-term goals are a stepstone to long-term and Mid-term goals.
Mid-term goals are also important functioning like a transition between short-term and long-term goals. This is critical in my point of view as it should be more concrete goals because it comes after another 5 years of work and experience. It really is the time to bring a chance to your country or community at this point which is normally between 5-15 years or some people claim it should be something in 10 years.
Long-term goals are the ultimate destination of your career journey which should definitely complete the vision. They are the big picture that you have in mind, such as getting to the peak of the hierarchy, becoming a CEO or Leader in your field, starting your own business, or making a significant contribution to your field of study. Long-term goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. At the same time, it can be a little idealistic but not too much. Both short and long-term goals should be aligned to solving the big problem (in your long-term goals) that you have in mind to solve in the long run. The long-term goal(s) should be set between 5-25 years.
To build strong career goals, start by asking yourself what you want to achieve, what problem you want to solve, and why. Your goals should be meaningful and aligned with your values and passions. Make them specific and realistic, and break them down into achievable steps. Both for your essays and your interview, have a clear step-by-step plan to get you from where you are right now to your goals in the next 25 years. You don’t have to illustrate or write the steps one by one in your application, essays, statement of purpose, or interview but you differently need to show them clearly.
In conclusion, building strong career goals, initiatives, and networks is crucial to achieving success, and solving at least one big problem in your community. Be intentional in your actions, seek out mentors and opportunities, and invest in yourself through education and training. Remember that success is a journey, and every step you take toward your goals counts.
